NTC releases discussion paper seeking feedback on Chain of Responsibility (CoR) Duties

Those in the road freight industry will be interested to note that currently there is a review of the chain of responsibility duties underway. The review is a chance for the transport industry to voice their opinion of how the laws can be changed to better serve the industry and establish safer road behaviour.

There are apparently 1400 public level crossings in New South Wales. Between 2001-2002 and 2013-2014 in the state there were a reported 188 collisions at level crossings involving trains and road vehicles. Due to this high incident rate, police in the state have decided to embark on a level crossings safety campaign.

Chain of responsibility laws should incorporate roadworthiness of heavy vehicles, according to Minister Stephen Mullighan. The Minister wants trucks’ roadworthiness to form part of COR Laws to improve road safety following a number of incidents resulting from vehicles not being roadworthy.

The National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (NHVAS) was recently amended in an effort to improve road worthiness standards. Now the Federal infrastructure minister says that the new arrangements under the NHVAS will put the nation on the road to “risk-based assessment standards”.
