Making a Case for Autonomous Technology and Its Ability to Improve Safety

A US Senate Committee hearing is underway, examining the future highway safety benefits of applying regulatory guidelines for automated technology on trucks and other heavy vehicles. It is also looking into the effect these vehicles will have on the economy and jobs in particular.

Navistar International chairman and CEO Troy Clarke recently spoke about the benefits of autonomous vehicles regulation during the hearing.

He highlighted the importance of a clear “legislative and regulatory environment for vehicle manufacturers to design, test  and validate autonomous technology”.

In Australia, the NTC and AustRoads released national guidelines for trials of automated vehicles in Australia. The NTC has the task of delivering a reform which will facilitate the safe and legal operation of automated vehicles on Australian roads by 2020.
