Addressing Driver Shortage Issue

The National Road Transport Association (NatRoad) and Paccar Dealer Network have announced a “Future Ready” program at the 2018 NatRoad Annual Conference to tackle the issue of the looming national driver shortage.

They highlight that less than 15 per cent of truck drivers are under the age of 30. This coupled with the fact that the road freight task is expected to double by 2030, their concerns of a driver shortage are warranted.

According to NatRoad CEO Warren Clark the average age of drivers is 53 and there are issues for drivers under the age of 25 to get insurance. These 2 issues make recruiting skilled drivers a challenge.

One of the main aims is getting young people to join the sector, which they aim to do through the introduction of this program.
